SLPL Live: Cross-Pollinating Music & Nature
On Friday, April 25 & Saturday, April 26 2025 an EcoTones small ensemble of Jody Redhage Ferber (cello & compositions), Chris Cheek (saxophone & compositions), and Adam Maness (keyboard) played creative new music directly inspired by various ecotones in the St. Louis region and their resident flora & fauna. Repertoire performed included River of Ugly Fishes by Chris Cheek, written for the Meremac River; Swiftly by Jody Redhage Ferber, written for the chimney swift birds of Emenegger Nature Park; Mourning Dove Blues by Alan Ferber, written for this ubiquitous urban-dweller; and a raucous rendition of Tiger Moth Jam, celebrating Tiger Moths' abilities to "jam" the sonar of predator bats to protect themselves. These joyful intergenerational concert events featured a chance for the audience to become the percussion section and showcased some burning solo improvisations from the EcoTones Ensemble, with repertoire in a stylistic ecotone between classical chamber music and jazz improvisation.
