This concert featured 19 world-class professional musicians from the St. Louis region performing in small ensembles on various natural stages around Emmenegger Nature Park’s hilly deciduous forest alongside the Meramec River and adjacent to its vast open fields, a playground for its resident Chimney Swifts. Highlights included an Alphorn trio performing on a ridge above the forest floor, resounding through the valley for all hikers and seated listeners, new compositions for violin, clarinet, cello, and guitar written and performed for Emmenegger’s resident Chimney Swifts and Chickadees, a new duo composition inspired by the Meramec river titled “River of Ugly Fishes” (a translation of the Osage name for the river), solo bassoon performing on the forest floor with late-afternoon light filtering through the golden leaves, and a jazz set whimsically inspired by the characteristics and homes of Emmenegger’s resident chimney swifts. Performers included members of the SLSO and some of the best jazz, blues, and folk players on the St. Louis scenes, and attendance by over 200 audience members.
